"Wirkstoff aktuell" Zoledronic acid (Aclasta® 5 mg infusion solution)
[PDF]
("Wirkstoff aktuell" 04/2008)
According to the efficiency, there is no evidence for the advantage of zoledronic acid compared to the more favorably priced oral bisphosphonates in the treatment of postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.
Pimecrolimus (Elidel®); Tacrolimus (Protopic®)
[PDF]
("Wirkstoff aktuell" 07/2007)
Exenatide (Byetta®)
[PDF]
("Wirkstoff aktuell" 06/2007)
Insulin is the preferred substance in the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus that could not reach normoglycaemia with the help of oral antidiabetic agents. Exenatide can be indicated in special cases. The high costs of treatment should be taken into consideration.

Neuraminidase inhibitors (oseltamivir (Tamiflu®); zanamivir (Relenza))
[PDF]
("Wirkstoff aktuell" 01/2007)
According to present epidemiologic findings the neuraminidase inhibitors oseltamivir and zanamivir do not have an additional use in the treatment of seasonal influenza but increase the costs. Besides hygienic measures the influenza vaccination is important for the prevention of infections. There is no evidence for the efficiency of neuraminidase inhibitors for the prevention and treatment of avian influenza ("bird flu") in humans. This online version of "Wirkstoff aktuell" includes additional information to the printed version (insert of "Deutsches Arzteblatt" (Journal of the German Medical Association), issue 12 of 23.03.2007). In the online version has been taken into account that Relenza is approved for the prevention of influenza too.
Quetiapine (Seroquel®)
[PDF]
("Wirkstoff aktuell" 05/2006)
The low-priced typical (= conventional, classic) antipsychotics like haloperidol do not show a lower efficiency in the treatment of schizophrenic psychosis than the atypical antipsychotic group. The expensive quetiapine is not a superior drug in schizophrenia treatment.
Etanercept (Enbrel®) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
[PDF]
("Wirkstoff aktuell" 04/2006)
In patients with refractory rheumatoid arthritis etanercept (Enbrel®) is an effective, but expensive drug of second quality. Special attention should be paid to the serious risks of the TNF-alpha blockade.
Infliximab (Remicade®) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
[PDF]
("Wirkstoff aktuell" 03/2006)
In patients with refractory rheumatoid arthritis infliximab (Remicade®) is an effective, but expensive drug of second quality. Special attention should be paid to the serious risks of the TNF-alpha blockade.
Esomeprazole (Nexium mups 20 mg®, Nexium mups 40 mg®)
[PDF]
("Wirkstoff aktuell" 02/2006)
In comparison to other proton pump inhibitors Esomeprazole shows no clinically relevant difference in effectiveness. More competitive omeprazole generic drugs achieve the same therapeutic success.
Nicotinic acid (Niaspan® extended-release tablets)
[PDF]
("Wirkstoff aktuell" 01/2006)
Niaspan® is approved for the treatment of patients with lipid metabolism disorders, especially with high LDL cholesterol and high triglycerides as well as low HDL cholesterol. It can also be used for the treatment of patients with primary hypercholesterolemia in combination with a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. It is indicated as monotherapy only in patients who do not tolerate HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. Diet and other non-pharmacological measures should be continued.
Atomoxetine (Strattera® capsules)
